This week, Patrik Sandell, founder of FlatOut Sweden and former professional rally driver, travels to Southern Africa to represent Sweden and Europe in the Defender Trophy 2026 World Final—one of the world's toughest driving and adventure competitions.
After winning the European Final earlier this summer against more than 250 competitors, Patrik secured his place among an elite group of finalists from over 50 countries. The World Final will take competitors across the spectacular landscapes of South Africa, where they will face a series of demanding challenges that test far more than driving ability.
The Modern Spirit of the Camel Trophy
For anyone who remembers the legendary Camel Trophy expeditions of the 1980s and 1990s, Defender Trophy represents a modern interpretation of that same adventurous spirit.
While it is its own competition, Defender Trophy combines technical off-road driving, navigation, endurance, teamwork, and problem-solving in some of the world's most remote environments. It is a true test of character, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure.
Unlike traditional motorsport, success is not measured by speed alone. Competitors must work together, adapt to constantly changing conditions, and overcome challenges where leadership and teamwork are just as important as driving skill.

The Defender Trophy World Final is held in partnership with Tusk, Defender's long-standing conservation partner.
Throughout the competition, participants will take part in missions inspired by the real challenges faced by conservation teams working to protect endangered wildlife and preserve some of Africa's most valuable ecosystems. The event highlights that adventure can also create a positive impact for both nature and local communities.
