Swedish rally driver Patrik Sandell and founder of FlatOut Sweden will represent Sweden and Europe in the Defender Trophy 2026 World Final after an outstanding performance during the European Final in Les Comes, Spain.

The qualification event brought together more than 250 competitors from across Europe, all competing for a coveted place in the global final. Over ten demanding days, participants were tested not only on their driving skills but also on their physical endurance, navigation, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and determination under pressure.

Following a series of intense challenges, Patrik Sandell secured one of just fourteen European places in the Defender Trophy World Final.

"Qualifying for the World Final feels absolutely incredible," says Patrik Sandell. "The days in Les Comes were both physically demanding and incredibly inspiring. Competing alongside so many talented people from across Europe and experiencing the teamwork and spirit of Defender Trophy has been unforgettable. Now all my focus is on preparing for Africa and the challenges that lie ahead."

A Global Adventure with a Greater Purpose

Defender Trophy is far more than an off-road competition. Inspired by the legendary Trophy and Challenge expeditions of the past, it combines adventure, technical driving, endurance, and teamwork with a meaningful conservation mission.

The competition is held in partnership with Tusk, Defender's long-standing conservation partner. Many of the challenges are inspired by real-life situations faced by Tusk's field teams, where reliable vehicles, quick decision-making, and collaboration are essential for protecting wildlife and supporting local communities across Africa.

Later this year, finalists from more than 50 countries will come together in Southern Africa, where the World Final will take place across Namibia, Angola, and Botswana. Competitors will face some of the world's most demanding terrain while contributing to conservation-focused missions alongside Tusk.

Europe's Toughest Qualifier

The European Final took place in Les Comes, Spain, between June 4–14, 2026. Throughout the event, competitors tackled a wide range of demanding tasks, including:

  • Technical off-road driving
  • Navigation and route planning
  • Endurance and fitness challenges
  • Obstacle courses
  • Improvised bridge construction
  • Night mountain expeditions
  • Team-based problem solving under pressure

Success depended not only on driving ability but also on leadership, resilience, communication, and the ability to perform under challenging conditions.

Looking Ahead to Africa

Patrik now joins an elite group of international finalists preparing for the Defender Trophy World Final later this year. Representing Sweden on the global stage, he will compete alongside participants from more than 50 nations while supporting Defender's shared mission of adventure, teamwork, and conservation.

Everyone at Flat Out Sweden is incredibly proud of Patrik's achievement and looks forward to following his journey as he represents both Sweden and Europe in one of the world's most demanding adventure competitions.

The road to Africa has only just begun.
